Sam Dekker To Leave Wisconsin Badgers And Declare For 2015 NBA Draft

In relatively unsurprising news, Wisconsin junior Sam Dekker opted to declare for the 2015 NBA Draft on Friday morning.  Dekker was a key contributor in Wisconsin's back-to-back appearances in the Final Four and their Big Ten title and Big Ten Tournament championship this season.

Dekker took to Twitter to announce his decision and in a release from Wisconsin, Dekker talked about what it was like to grow up in Wisconsin and play for the Badgers at the collegiate level.

“These past three years have been the best, most memorable years of my life,” Dekker said. “Growing up in the state and being able to wear Wisconsin across my chest has been a dream come true."

Dekker also took the opportunity to thank Wisconsin across the board for their contributions over the last few seasons.

“I truly can't say thank you enough to my teammates, coaches, training staff and the fans, for everything they’ve done,”Dekker added. “I am so grateful for the opportunities Coach Ryan and UW-Madison have given me. I couldn’t have asked for anything more from my experience.”

For Wisconsin, this is a major loss as Dekker was certainly one of the biggest contributors for the team and may have even been the team's best player during their run in the 2015 NCAA Tournament.  Overall, Dekker played 77.0% of the minutes for Wisconsin this season with a 125.8 offensive rating and averaged 13.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.  He also ate up 22.4% of the possessions while on the court, which will be tough to replace.

Dekker's departure also is significant for a team losing a lot already.  Thomas Beindit of BTPowerhouse tweeted about the losses and they are severe to say the least.
Wisconsin will have a big challenge on their hands in replacing Sam Dekker, but Badger fans will certainly be thankful they got to watch him for 3 years and enjoy one of the better careers in recent history in Madison.
